It’s no secret that everyone, and I mean everyone’s days are jam packed with work, school, social events and far more… the ups and downs ofLIFE. But, how can we optimize our time, organize our tasks and still make time/ room for the things we love, or better yet the non negotiable things we need to succeed in our dancing career?
My simple answer is a planning system, and here’s why. Over the years of my dance career I have searched high and low for the best practices to get me where I wanted to be. Be that teaching, performing, producing an event or just the daily tasks of running a business and nothing keeps me more grounded, accountable or organized more than my daily planner. Most people that know me, know that I often operate out of two or three planners and that is not including the calendar app on my iPhone. I implore you all to do the same. No, you don’t need three planners! ( I know it’s a bit excessive, but it works for me.) But, a little organization can go a long way and I find that hand writing tasks, much like studying for an exam in school holds us accountable, and improves our productivity, and that massively translates to our dancing.
Utilizing a planning system can help you as a dancer, teacher, performer, studio owner or team coach by giving you a space to be more intentional.
When we write something down, it gives it a distinct reality. We are letting the Universe know that we are serious about what we want to accomplish. If you write out your long-term and/or short-term dance goals, you are generally more likely to achieve them! Your dance planner is a great place to keep track of weekly, monthly, and yearly goals all in addition to your daily tasks. You can also track your progress; this way you are keeping yourself accountable and are less likely to get discouraged, distracted, or forget how important your dancing goals are to you.
Time is money, money is time, and who doesn’t want MORE TIME!?
I know I do. Having good time management practices help you to reduce stress, clarify your goals, and prioritize your time. As a result, you have more time to work on and harness your craft as a dancer, teacher, coach or studio owner. Having an organizational tool such as a planner can help you find the room and breath in your week to maybe stretch, organize a messy prop closet or maybe finally take that extra class you’ve been dying to make. When you manage your time acutely, you can plan your day, increase your performance, which makes more time for better business and career practices as well as enjoy ALL of the things you love.
Every planner is different, and it’s often hard to find a planner that matches the needs of a busy dancer, but the beauty in being a creative, is improvising and making your planner a space that works for you and your dance business, whatever that looks like for you. In my personal every day carry planner, I of course have sections for my monthly, weekly, daily planning needs but also spaces to log and keep track of my finances, personal information or goals along side a running tab for teaching, coaching and personal dance class schedules. I can tell you, my head would probably roll off if I didn’t have an organized way to keep it all in place, but more over, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy friends and family, execute personal initiatives or better yet, be a great teacher, and enjoy the successes of my business. Not to mention, I enjoy the act of planning, decorating, and organizing my week. Much like dance class, my planner gives me an outlet for creativity and as dancers who doesn’t love yet another outlet for expressing our passions.
So, If you’re looking for a simple way to optimize your dance career, teaching/coaching or business, maybe a planner system is right for you.
The day to day daily tasks to run our dance businesses can be hectic and its far easier to navigate that if WE are leading the day, vs. the day leading us.
The methodology is simple really, “Less mess, less stress, MORE DANCE!”
